A Tree I Never Planned to Grow

My amla tree entered my garden by accident. Someone gifted me a sapling, and I planted it without much excitement. I didn’t expect it to become a favorite. It wasn’t exotic, it wasn’t trendy, and it didn’t require special care. It simply existed in one corner, quietly growing. But as months passed, it began to surprise me with its resilience and steady strength.

Amla Loves Bangalore’s Climate

One of the biggest reasons I now appreciate this tree is its adaptability. Bangalore’s unpredictable weather – long dry spells, sudden rain, cool evenings – can stress many fruit trees. But not amla. It handled everything calmly. Even during weeks when I got busy and forgot to water it regularly, it stayed green. Its leaves remained fresh, its growth steady, and its trunk thickened with quiet confidence.

The First Fruits and Their Unexpected Joy

When the tree finally fruited, I felt an unexpected joy. The fruits were small, firm, and bright green. I plucked the first one with so much excitement. The taste was sharp and refreshing, far better than anything from a store. I quickly realized how versatile the fruit is. Chutneys, pickles, infused water – suddenly this “simple tree” was contributing to my kitchen in meaningful ways.

What Amla Taught Me About Simplicity

Amla doesn’t demand much. It doesn’t need constant pruning, special soil, or expensive fertilizers. It thrives in red soil, tolerates full sun, and resists most pests naturally. Yet, it gives back generously. Growing this tree made me appreciate the beauty of native plants – the ones perfectly adapted to our climate and lifestyle.

A Tree Every Beginner Should Consider

If you’re starting a home garden, I genuinely believe amla should be on your list. It grows quickly, stays healthy with minimal attention, and rewards you with nutritious fruit. But more importantly, it teaches you to value simplicity. Not every beautiful thing in a garden needs to be exotic. Sometimes the most underrated plants bring the most consistent joy.
