The Monsoon Effect: What My Garden Looks Like During Bangalore Rains

The First Rain That Changes Everything
When the monsoon arrives, my garden transforms almost overnight. The soil darkens, the air cools, and the plants respond with a sudden burst of energy. New shoots appear, leaves become glossy, and the whole garden feels alive in a way that is hard to describe.
Growth That Feels Almost Magical
Gourds, beans, amaranthus, curry leaves – all grow at twice their usual speed. Even plants that looked sleepy for months suddenly start pushing out new growth. The sound of raindrops on leaves, the smell of wet soil, and the constant presence of birds and insects make the garden feel like its own little world.
But Monsoon Isn’t All Romance
With the beauty comes a fair share of problems. Fungal infections spread quickly. Tomatoes crack or rot easily. Cauliflower and cabbage struggle with excess moisture. Even the soil can remain waterlogged for days, stressing the roots.
Preparing for the Storm
Before monsoon, I prune excess branches to improve airflow. I add mulch to protect the soil and build small channels to direct rainwater away from sensitive plants. Shielding delicate varieties under a simple plastic sheet or shade net can make a huge difference.
The Season That Teaches Balance
Monsoon forces me to adapt, observe, and respond. It’s a season of abundance and challenge, beauty and care. And every year, the garden and I learn a little more from each other.
